Landmark submitted by howarde on August 18, 2020, 10:19am These almost 900 pages contain (almost?) all of Baldwin's published essays. It includes five complete books as well as many shorter pieces. What to say about them? Baldwin is an amazingly subtle thinker who approached the problems of racial injustice with zero BS, and yet, at least until later in his life, remained hopeful in the potential of the United States to one day live up to its promise of freedom and equality. His prose style, while it may be a little challenging to get into, is absolutely gorgeous. These essays are infuriating, funny, heartbreaking, and always challenge the reader in the best way.
