Modern Manners submitted by osbornk on June 27, 2016, 7:58pm Curtis Sittenfeld mastered the truly daunting assignment of retelling one of English literature's most beloved novels, Pride and Prejudice. Her characters have been teleported 200 years from the rural English countryside to Cleveland, Ohio with their personalities and foibles intact. Even thought you know how the story goes, I think you will enjoy Sittenfeld's craftsmanship in her retelling while resolving to re-read the original next.

Hugely Enjoyable Summer Read! submitted by sdunav on July 23, 2016, 11:24am I started out with low expectations, but was quickly enchanted by this retelling of Pride & Prejudice set in Cincinnati. The chapters are short and snappy - it's the perfect beach read, funny and thoughtful but a book you can put down and not spend all night reading resulting in a book hangover.. I particularly liked Lydia and Kitty and their CrossFit/Paleo and party girl personas. Mr. Collins is also fun as an internet mogul with limited social skills.

No romance...IMO submitted by jngrl7 on July 30, 2016, 11:22am I felt like this was a weak, modern interpretation of P&P. Elizabeth and Darcy are supposed to be deep in love with each other, which they realize after so many misunderstandings. The liz and Darcy characters in this book seemed to have a superficial relationship based on sex. There was no romance.

Entertaining submitted by dicencal on July 30, 2016, 5:26pm I was really excited about this book because Curtis Sittenfeld is the master of the problematic narrator. I was looking forward to seeing how she handled the sisters, especially Lizzy. Eligible was entertaining and clever, but not as good as Prep or Sisterland. Overall, it's a clever updating of Pride and Prejudice.

Pleasantly Surprised submitted by indecisivenerd on June 25, 2017, 7:13pm This is a quick, enjoyable read. Great for the summer. I thought the modern day characters were entertaining, although I much prefer the original.

Entertaining submitted by kkellis on July 15, 2018, 10:03pm This was a quick, entertaining read. I didn't enjoy it as much as other Curtis Sittenfeld novels, however.

fun, one time read submitted by treechild on June 21, 2019, 4:41pm A modern day adaptation of Pride and Prejudice--nit the best retelling, but also not the worst. Makes for a fun summer read!

Quick but not great submitted by Cihendricks on August 9, 2023, 8:56am I has high-ish expectations based on the author’s other works. It’s an easy read. It’s diverting. But it just felt a bit forced. The narrative is fast-paced and engaging. But I never really cared about the characters or felt connected to them. And I have massive unanswered questions about the Bennets’ financial situation.

Like quotas being checked off submitted by kkjammers on August 12, 2023, 6:14pm Eligible is a clever and involved story. This updated version of Pride and Prejudice was enjoyable, mostly, but I was occasionally repulsed at the scatological references. The re-drawn characters were generally true to Austen's originals: Kitty and Lydia are obnoxious; Mrs. Bennet is vacuous and self-consumed; Mr. Bennet is absent-minded and tolerant of his wife's histrionics; Mary is detached and academically inclined; Jane is sweet and beautiful; Lizzie is outspoken, observant, and a writer; Darcy is aloof and morally stalwart. I admired how well Sittenfeld constructed the story, though I felt that the inclusion of the transgender and multiracial couplings was unconvincing.
