Briggs changes it up a little. submitted by eknapp on June 27, 2016, 8:38am Interestingly (or boringly, depending on your perspective) this entry in the Mercy Thompson series is mostly politics. There are a few quick and dirty fae-vs-werewolf skirmishes to keep matters lively, but Briggs has finally abandoned her David/Goliath formula. There's no massive unstoppable killing machine to stop, no unavoidable doom for Mercy to avoid. It's mostly negotiation and maneuvering between the Columbia Basin Pack and the Gray Lords of the fae, trying to avoid a devastating war. It worked for me. YMMV.

That's not the only break from formula in Fire Touched. During world-building, the author constructed a decidedly sexist werewolf hierarchy, and I mentally applauded her for drawing on wolf social structure and resisting the impulse to contrive some social progress. In Fire Touched, she drags her hero's werewolf pack kicking and screaming into the 21st century. And while it's a touch heavy-handed, she makes it work. Kudos, Ms Briggs.

I do wish they'd stop doing sexy covers for this series. It's annoying to have to keep the cover hidden while reading on the bus.
