The Mighty Big and the Mighty Small submitted by FordAlpha on June 27, 2018, 10:23pm I read a lot of Bill Peet books growing up, and I enjoy reading them to my kids now--although I confess that their length often exceeds my read-aloud energy. Concise they are not. Anyway, "The Ant and the Elephant" is one that my kids enjoy hearing often. A series of jungle animals refuse to help others in trouble, only to find themselves in sticky spots. Finally, a cheerful elephant rescues them all, unperturbed by their ingratitude. But when the elephant finds himself trapped, it's the first and smallest of the creatures he rescued--an ant--who comes to his aid. This is one of Peet's more moralistic outings (the Golden Rule; help others freely; express gratitude to those who help you), but it's not laid on too thick, and the animals' predicaments are humorous. Bill Peet was a Disney animation artist, and his colored-pencil illustrations are always excellent, particularly the animals' expressions, ranging from oblivious to enraged.
