Tight political scifi thriller submitted by eknapp on September 6, 2016, 3:03pm The thrilling conclusion to the Brilliance saga! (Normally when I say things like that it’s with tongue firmly in cheek, but Written in Fire was actually quite a ride.)

Cooper finally begins to grasp the true scope of chessmaster/terrorist John Smith’s grand plan, and it is world-warping. The title of the book is apt. In this final outing he chases a mad scientist who may hold the key to saving the world, hunts John Smith, battles a racist (normist?) militia’s genocidal rampage across the New Canaan Holdfast, and fights to keep the Holdfast and United States government from annihilating each other. Not bad for 340 pages. The plot flies like it’s on a rocket sled.

Written in Fire also serves as an introductory course in manipulative political rhetoric, as the frightened majority norms beat their wardrums and psych each other up to invade, lynch, or imprison their gifted neighbors. When the militia leader speaks it sounds a lot like a Trump speech, inflaming without informing and arousing pseudo-patriotic fervor while discouraging critical thinking.

It’s not the most nuanced or reflective of series, but it’s a hell of a fun ride.
