Off to Sea submitted by john_tincher on February 10, 2007, 12:28pm This is a great book and the beginning of a wonderful series of stories about two friend, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. Set in the 1800 the two main characters meet and set-off on their adventures in the sloop-of-war, HMS Sophie. If you like sea-battles, the early 1800's, or just a great adventure, this book is for you.

A marvelous beginning submitted by GJBarnett2 on August 21, 2011, 5:33pm The first in O'Brien's justly renowned Aubrey-Maturin series. Better than the Hornblower books, the entire series should be read, first to last. Interesting not only for the characters, the action and the lore of the sailing ship, but also for the dialogue which is in the vernacular of the time, more flowery than the Queen's English today.

The start of something very good submitted by thomaslcook1998 on July 29, 2022, 6:51pm This first novel in the Aubrey-Maturin series introduces us to Jack Aubrey, newly promoted to the rank of Master and Commander in the British Navy of the early 1800's, and to Stephen Maturin - physician, polyglot, naturalist, and so much more as will be revealed over the course of 20 novels. By the end of the book you will have become completely immersed in a world far removed from our own yet full of relatable humor and humans. There's a wiki - http://wiki.hmssurprise.org/ - that'll help you fill in all the many enjoyable gaps in your knowledge as you progress through the novels. Personally, I re-read the whole series every year and it never gets old.
