Beauty in Brevity submitted by DBJC on June 15, 2018, 12:12pm These poems are easy to consume which I think is the point. I’m not on Instagram so I haven’t seen these poems in their intended form, but I do get the idea. Rupi Kaur definitely brings up a lot of stuff in these short poems which can be overwhelming if not careful. Some of them reached down into the deepest parts of my heart. She described emotions and feelings that I didn’t know how to describe and I thank her for that. The issue that I had with these poems was just the brevity of them. There’s a lot of heavy stuff in this collection that crunched into a few words. But, her brevity is the amount amount to tug at "heartsrings" so to speak. More people are reading poetry because of her and I thank her for that.

Succinct Reflections of Love and Grief submitted by sdunav on June 17, 2018, 5:52pm These short pieces may not be to everyone's taste (they're not terribly sophisticated when it comes to poetry), but most women can relate to the subject matter - first love, loss, emotional trauma, family dysfunction, body image, etc. There are also a few references to the author's Sikh background and life as an immigrant. The simple line drawings accompanying the fragmentary poems are a nice addition to the collection.

Much more than meets the eye. submitted by zoe.dvh on June 21, 2018, 12:10pm Some of the previous reviews say that there is not much to these poems, or that they aren't sophisticated. I beg to differ. Rupi Kaur is a stunning poet and, whilst I agree that her poems may be short, they are powerful and contain loads of emotion when it comes to the language and the way the words flow on the page with the accompanied illustrations. I think it is quite beautiful how much emotion and thought can be conveyed with such few words and it is truly unique. Definitely give this book a try, as well as another book of hers, "The Sun and Her Flowers". Happy reading!

Short and compelling submitted by irksit on June 27, 2018, 10:29am I might have cried a little reading this...

Underwhelming submitted by Princess Cimorene on August 9, 2018, 12:37pm I had much higher expectations for this book. While it is accessible and readable, which is great for getting more people to appreciate poetry, there is not much originality here. The metaphors have all been done before and there doesn't seem to be much effort in the language or drawings. I was hoping to get to know the poet more through her writing, but the poems don't really have a unique or interesting voice; they feel like they could have been written by anyone...which I guess is why so many people identify with them.

Ok instagram posts, not poems submitted by redwood on August 18, 2019, 12:26pm Boring "poems" that some say were plagiarized from another poet. Don't waste your time.

Emotional submitted by annabanana11 on August 23, 2019, 10:26pm Although many criticize these poems for lack of originality and creativity, what matters to me is how one feels after reading a poem... and these always make me slow down and think about my life, wonder if I'm happy and wonder what could change. Her poems are simple which allows them to be accessible to everyone, even when someone is in the depths of despair and doesn't wish to struggle to comprehend.

I may be basic, but it was the right book at the time submitted by Vega on August 29, 2019, 11:03pm My snobby English major acquaintance might turn up their nose at this as "Twitter poetry", but I enjoyed it. The art lent a very personal air to each poem, creating new meaning. Most of all, this book was the right book for me at the right time. I was going through a bad break-up and this book really hit on all the notes and phases of a relationship, from birth to death. I nearly cried because of how astonishingly honest it was.

My first RK book submitted by bcartm01 on June 21, 2022, 9:01pm This was the first of the authors books that I have read, and I read it without knowing the hype behind the author. I really enjoyed the style of her poems and found several of them to be deeply moving. I recommend reading this short book of poetry.
