Very Merry submitted by avrogers1 on August 16, 2017, 8:56pm This is such a cute story and a fantastic addition to the Pout-Pout fish stories. It makes a fantastic Christmas time book. I love the illustrations.

Uneven Reading But It Has One Fantastic Two-Page Illustration submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:52pm This book gets a passing grade from me almost entirely on the strength of its illustrations, especially one particular two-page spread with a heap of very satisfying literary and cultural references disguised as items for sale in a gift shop. The story itself, however, leaves a bit to be desired, revolving around a fairly typical moral message about gifts from the heart that seems to be contradicted somewhat by the accompanying pictures (the pout-pout fish does come up with suitable presents, but they are immediately traded around among his friends with no reason given in the text). A somewhat predictable storyline is rescued somewhat by the wonderfully imaginative setting, but again the text simply fails; it would be nearly impossible to read this book aloud, given the incredibly uneven rhythm that changes on nearly every page. The words never land in a proper groove, making the book unnecessarily difficult and in fact slightly unpleasant. Without any strong unique components to prop it up past these shortcomings, the book is ultimately a disappointment.
