A great book for lovers of suspense/mystery submitted by Sridevi on August 13, 2009, 11:36am I immensly enjoyed this book and the author used a very cool style of storytelling. The book is about a woman trying to find out who massacared her family when she was very young. The book flips back and forth between the past (from the perspective of different characters) and the present where the woman is trying to discover the truth. It is like you are trying to unravel the mystery from both ends (the past and the present). It ended nicely and left you feeling satisfied with how the mystery wrapped up. I highly recommend this book!

Finish it to know the ending, not because I cared... submitted by Juliettie on August 3, 2013, 7:16pm Another in a series of books I keep finding...I read to know the ending without really caring what the ending is. Flynn certainly crafts a solid plotline, one that I really did want to follow to its end. Sadly, though, here's another book of totally unlikable characters. Like Gone Girl...I didn't honestly care who was guilty or innocent because I just didn't feel any sympathy whatsoever for the characters. I wanted to like Libby, I really did. Poor little thing who saw her family murdered. But, yuck, what an unlikable person. I was invested enough to want to know who did them in, however, but I found myself skimming pages just to get there. Eh.

The plot starts strong, but the ending disapoints. submitted by lopsop73 on July 14, 2015, 1:01pm I really wanted give this book 5 stars, but as I got to the middle of the story, I found myself just wanting to get to the end, hence the 3.5 stars. Some of the characters are well-developed, but they are unlikeable and very dismal (even the protaganist). Sadly, by the time the answers were revealed, it was just a 'meh' reaction from me... wasn't sure if it was because the characters were all so pathetic, or if it was good storytelling and the suspense was built up, and I wanted a more dramatic ending. Anyways, it's a fairly good read if you're taking a vacation and if you want to read something suspenseful and with an easy-to-read narrative.

ok, not great submitted by sumsaylor on July 31, 2015, 8:51pm This is my least favorite of Gillian Flynn's books. I didn't connect with the characters and I had to push myself to finish it.

Good story bad characters submitted by steveiew on July 11, 2016, 3:32pm If you are sick of reading thrillers that lack likable characters then do not pick up this book. The plot was decent though nothing was too shocking. By the end I just wanted to know what happened and didn't care about much else.

True Crime-Style Fiction submitted by dntanzer on August 10, 2018, 9:24am As with all of Flynn's books, the plot is disturbing, but hard to pull away from. Definitely heavy on the violence. This book reminded me of true crime podcasts that have become increasingly popular. The narration alternates between our current day protagonist investigating a horrific crime from many years ago and narration from the people involved leading up to the crime itself.

Not bad submitted by ellec on July 13, 2022, 5:22pm I read this book right after finishing and loving Sharp Objects, which is also by the author. I did not think it was as well-written, perhaps because I thought the characters were not particularly likable. It was a quick read, so I don't regret it, but I would not read it again.
