Creepy Paris in 1929 submitted by sdunav on June 16, 2014, 8:14pm King never disappoints me; even her mediocre books are well written and researched. This was an excellent creepy mystery, filled with the kinds of characters and setting that make you spend an hour online researching Man Ray, Lee Miller, and other denizens of Paris in 1929.

I would have given it five stars if the main character was more likable. He was way too much the world weary private eye. I liked many of the ancillary characters much better.

The bones theme was awesome - perfect for Halloween. And for anyone who is interested in art history, surrealism, the history of serial killers, shadow boxes, clocks, and "found objects".

Macabre, but good! submitted by teri on August 18, 2020, 6:18pm Ah - the previous review written by sdunav hits this spot on!
Laurie King is an excellent writer, and the way she includes historical people and places makes for an even better read. Taking place during the "Jazz Age", the main character (I agree, he wasn't very likable) trolls the nightclubs of Montparnasse - running into people like Hemingway, Josephine Baker, Cole Porter.
Creepy? Yes. But compelling, and very well told.

Creepy mystery in 1920s Paris submitted by vickik on June 20, 2023, 2:17pm In this creepy novel of suspense set in 1920s Paris, American private investigator Harris Stuyvesant searches for a young woman, an artists' model, who has gone missing. His search takes him to a theater producing realistic horror plays and the studio of an artist who creates art objects out of human bones. He also encounters many famous people from the literary and artistic world of Paris at the time, including Hemingway, Picasso, Cole Porter, and the surrealist artist Man Ray, who plays an important role in the plot. Not for the squeamish, but a perfect Halloween read!
