An interesting novel
submitted by Jinxyluis on August 11, 2021, 2:07pm
As the title implies, it’s a retelling of the Biblical story of Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel, which was inspired by Belli’s discovery of and fascination with the apocryphal books that expand on the stories of their lives. I’m always interested in retellings and reversals of Biblical stories, and found this book quite fascinating.
Belli’s story begins in the garden where Adam and Eve awaken, and immediately their purpose in life is a point of contention, with their creator a silent observer and their primary source of information the questionably reliable Serpent. Although most of the content of this novel wasn’t unexpected, Belli adds a new level of rich details and emotional impact. I loved her take on the character of Eve, her mind and how she pondered deeply the meaning and purpose of their existence, puzzling out the intentions of a largely absent creator with nothing but paltry clues and her own critical thinking. Cain and Abel’s twin sisters, Luluwa and Aklia respectively, were the other notable additions to the novel (they are also present in some apocryphal books), and Belli really goes there with the implications of a single family tasked with populating the Earth. Overall I found this book to be so interesting and quite enjoyed reading it.
