Charlie Watts Kills It
submitted by Caser on May 31, 2011, 7:31pm
Big thanks to Bill Janowitz and 33 1/3 series for guiding me to my first Charlie Watts breakthrough moment. I've heard Mick and Keith and basically everyone ever connected to the Stones rave about the drumming of Watts, but I never thought it was all that. Maybe if they thought he was so good they could've put him up in the mix on Exile, that's all I'm saying.
Around page 66 of this book, Janowitz drools all over himself describing Watts' fills at the buildup of Exile's album opener, "Rocks Off" from 3:34 - 3:40 mark of the song. Thing is, he's totally right. Watts slays the kit with extreme prejudice, grooving way deep in the pocket and only getting more locked in until the song finally fades out and you just have to click back to the beginning to hear Keef's riff one more time. Watts isn't too busy, he's too smart for all that noise. What he does is lays down these snare hits that come just behind the off beat and feel like Mayweather blasts to the dome. Two, three, four and you're definitely coming back for more.
