Pregnancy--unquestionably one of the most pro¬%x;found, meaningful experiences of adulthood--can reduce otherwise intelligent women to, well, babies. We're told to avoid cold cuts, sushi, alcohol, and coffee, but aren't told why. Rules for prenatal testing are hard and fast--and unexplained. Are all of these recommendations right for every mom-to-be? Here, award-winning economist Emily Oster shows that pregnancy rules are often misguided and sometimes flat-out wrong. Pregnant women face an endless stream of decisions, from the casual to the frightening. Expecting Better presents the hard facts and real-world advice you won't get at the doctor's office or in the existing literature. --From publisher description.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

great resource for those pregnant or trying to get pregnant submitted by laurenalysse on August 6, 2018, 10:18am I enjoyed this book very much -- it truly approached the pregnancy research in a comprehensive way that took note of the paternalistic tendencies of much of the research on exposures during pregnancy.

Reassuring! submitted by srah on June 17, 2019, 11:20am I enjoyed this book and I wish I'd thought to read it before actually getting pregnant, because the sections about getting pregnant were also interesting.

*sigh* submitted by mrajraspn08 on April 29, 2021, 9:04am Maybe it's because I know how to read the facts myself (Master degree, with both degrees featuring statistics heavily), but I find this book and its sequel more infuriating than reassuring. It doesn't look at all the facts--she says repeatedly that there's no facts to support the opposite opinion when, in fact, there are. I don't believe doctors should be followed blindly, but I would trust the medical establishment as a whole over an economist when it comes to medicine. I think this book can be a great point to begin your own research and discussion--her facts and research are true, after all, just varying degrees of incomplete--but shouldn't be taken as a be-all-end-all for medical advice.

A must have for any expectant parent submitted by dpersonke on August 2, 2023, 9:57am The data driven insights are essential and Emily Oster's light hearted writing style is a delight to read.
