confused submitted by ssands on July 26, 2016, 9:37pm I don't knit much, but I am interested in how clothing proportions work with body shapes to change the way a person looks. I thought this book might help me make better clothing choices. The foundational idea is that women have three possible body outlines, top heavy, balanced, or bottom heavy. There are variations within those silhouettes but the main thing is to find the silhouette of the person for whom you knit. This is a good idea, but after carefully following the instructions and looking at the model photographs, I found myself baffled. The book has photographs that are supposed to show how it is done, but for example, the text says to draw a line across a photo of yourself facing forward at the hip level and then determine if a line drawn across the shoulder or bust is longer or shorter. But the hip line doesn't actually match the hip of the model in the example. So following the text exactly using the sample illustrations actually seems to result in a different categorization for some of them. Not being able to figure out the most important idea in the book made the rest of it much less useful. Who'd want to mistakenly spend the time to knit a garment that is designed for the opposite silhouette, after reading about how important knitting for the correct one is?
