When her husband dies in a car crash--not long after announcing he wants a divorce--Jo Mackenzie packs up her two rowdy boys and moves from London to a dilapidated villa in her seaside hometown where she takes over her beloved Gran's knitting shop. After a rough beginning, Jo soon finds comfort in a "Stitch and Bitch" group--a collection of quirky, lively women who share their stories, and their addiction to cake, with warmth and humor.

a nice read submitted by jayin on August 18, 2011, 7:46pm An engaging story about the trans-formative power of knitting. Who wouldn't love it!

rambly (and unrealistic?) submitted by camelsamba on June 22, 2015, 2:19pm I picked up a copy off the library free shelf to serve as airplane reading and it worked for that. It was rather rambly, and there were too many secondary characters (in the knitting group) who were hard to keep straight. Furthermore, the pace of progression from beginner to advanced knitter (and for finishing various objects) seemed unrealistic - knitting a sweater as your 2nd thing as Ellen did, and on her own away from teacher Jo? Huh. Maybe I'm just dreadfully inept.

Page 103: "I cast on Ellen's scarf for her, and we sit chatting while we knit, which is exactly how I want the group to be, only maybe with slightly less swearing:".

Just couldn't get in to it... submitted by bookher on July 13, 2019, 1:54pm I love knitting so was excited about this book but it just seemed so uninteresting to me. I couldn't get into it so I must admit that I never finished it.
