As they each attempt to overcome their loneliness, an adolescent girl, a boisterous reformer, and a Negro patriarch all look to Singer, a deaf mute, for some answer to what they want from life.

Well, I certainly have some FEELINGS about this book.
The prose was gorgeous, and I often found myself marvelling at how McCullers constructed certain sentences with such inherent poetry. But I especially liked how she crafted the characters. It’s evident from the beginning that each of the major characters is, in some way, an outcast of the community, held separate and not part of any group. Although they all forge their own strong connection with Singer, it’s inherently flimsy - for all that they confess their innermost thoughts to him and read meaning in his expressions and gestures, Singer himself remains inscrutable and unknown to the end.
And that remains the true tragedy of the text. Every one of these characters desperately wants to connect and form / maintain relationships, but somehow miss or do inadvertent damage every single time. This even extends to minor characters, like Mick’s younger brother or Dr. Copeland’s daughter.
I’m not quite sure what to take away from it all, but it certainly lends itself to some melancholy introspection.
