One Dimensional
submitted by mpcsoft on July 19, 2011, 8:52am
Tessa Hadley's "The London Train" is a two parter, creating two separate stories linked together by a relationship between the protagonists of each part.
The problem here is that the characters all remain rather one dimensional throughout each story. There is a difference between placing some emotional distance between the reader and the character, which if used properly can make a story much more interesting; and simply leaving the characters so one dimensional that it is impossible to care about them in any meaningful way.
It goes on and on, and then it ends. Kinda like a Mike Leigh movie.
Flat submitted by subeth on July 20, 2011, 8:59pm Slow moving plot, dull characters, but I was still driven to finish it. Left me unsatisfied.
