Excellent submitted by evie2017 on August 25, 2017, 7:04pm A powerful, tragic, and moving book that was initially nothing more than a school assignment, but quickly became one of my favorite books.
Insightful submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 12, 2021, 9:18pm I read this once or twice in the past (the first time was probably back in high school or college) and it still stands up as an outstanding memoir and insightful dive into the history and life of a boy growing up in apartheid South Africa. Mathabane pulls no punches, revealing the gritty reality of violence and necessity as a child in a deeply unjust system. I read Trevor Noah’s _Born A Crime_ immediately after _Kaffir Boy_ this time (about growing up in South Africa just as apartheid ended) and these two books paired amazingly well. I highly recommend both.
