great window into WW1 anti-war movement and in general submitted by hathaway1066 on July 14, 2014, 7:45pm Hochschild is yet again shining a light on an otherwise ignored/forgotten chapter of progressive/liberal history. In this case he is also telling the other side of the story, giving an even-handed look at those who opposed the war and those who did not. Great if you're interested in WW1, or pacifism or militarism of progressive/liberal views in the early modern era.

Social history of World War I submitted by amym on August 3, 2015, 12:19pm This is a fascinating book. It tells the stories about many English people involved in the military and in anti-war movements, starting back in the 19th century during the Boer war. It explains a lot about people's attitudes during that time about many things like imperialism, suffrage, poverty, non-Europeans. I feel I learned a lot about society of that time as well as the particulars of the war. Definitely the best book I have read about the war.
