And the Band Played On submitted by spostjacobs on August 26, 2018, 8:04pm This is the 20th anniversary (2007) edition of Randy Shilts' account of the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Shilts was one of the first journalists reporting on HIV & AIDS, and his vast knowledge is reflected in this brilliant book. He traces the history of the disease, primarily within the United States; the delayed responses from government & parts of the medical community; and tells the stories of several people living with HIV & AIDS. Over thirty years after the original publication of _And the Band Played On_, it can be easy to forget how much bravery and dedication this book represents. Its impact on the American public's view of HIV/AIDS and the government response was significant. And, it can be very helpful to read this book along with more recent and related histories, such as _How to Survive a Plague: The Inside Story of How Citizens and Science Tamed AIDS_.
