"Because of the disaster that was her last job, Zoe is searching for a fresh start as a travel book editor in the tourist-centric New York City. After stumbling across a seemingly perfect position though, Zoe is blocked at every turn because of the one thing she can't take off her resume -- human. Not to be put off by anything -- especially not her blood drinking boss or death goddess coworker -- Zoe delves deep into the monster world. But her job turns deadly when the careful balance between human and monsters starts to crumble -- with Zoe right in the middle"-- Provided by publisher.
""An exciting, witty urban fantasy series from podcaster Mur Lafferty, about a travel writer who takes a job with a shady publishing company in New York, only to find that she must write a guide to the city - for the undead!" --Provided by the publisher"-- Provided by publisher.

Very Funny Urban Fantasy submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:16pm This book takes a lot of familiar tropes from urban fantasy and presents them with a humorous twist, and instead of spending her time reinventing familiar creatures like vampires or zombies Mur Lafferty wisely concentrates on building a parallel fae world that feels as varied and as lived-in as the human world we are more familiar with. The book’s best touch is its humor, exemplified in the excerpts from the titular travel guidebook that accompany each chapter. I would read an entire “Shambling Guide to New York City” all on its own, without the benefit of the narrative context. The plucky protagonist’s strongest trait is her perseverance, and even if the book reads like wish fulfillment it is *satisfying* wish fulfillment that works within the context of the story. Unfortunately, the book’s ultimate villain reveal is eyeroll-worthy and dampens the stakes somewhat despite an action-packed finale that is otherwise incredibly satisfying. I don’t read widely in this subgenre, but I did enjoy this book despite a bit of a letdown in the final quarter or so; the rollicking sense of humor alone is enough to set it apart and makes it worth reading for anyone looking for something breezy with just a hint of danger to it.
