"Now with a new chapter"--page [1] of cover.
Depression -- Breakdowns -- Treatments -- Alternatives -- Populations -- Addiction -- Suicide -- History -- Poverty -- Politics -- Evolution -- Hope -- Since.
The author offers a look at depression in which he draws on his own battle with the illness and interviews with fellow sufferers, researchers, doctors, and others to assess the complexities of the disease, its causes and symptoms, and available therapies. This book examines depression in personal, cultural, and scientific terms. He confronts the challenge of defining the illness and describes the vast range of available medications, the efficacy of alternative treatments, and the impact the malady has on various demographic populations, around the world and throughout history. He also explores the thorny patch of moral and ethical questions posed by emerging biological explanations for mental illness. He takes readers on a journey into the most pervasive of family secrets and contributes to our understanding not only of mental illness but also of the human condition.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Be prepared to renew multiple times to get through it submitted by ckfinzel on July 12, 2019, 9:00am This is an incredibly thorough, incredibly dense memoir and info dump about the experience of severe depression as a white man. It is meticulously detailed and researched, and the author speaks with shocking candor about the physical, emotional, and social experience of depression. I found the chapters about the science of chronic depression to be very helpful and I appreciated that the author didn't shy away from how much the disorder sucks, but be warned: this book is a meticulous slog. It also is very heavily focused on severe forms of depression and breakdown, so if you are looking for information about the less intense forms of chronic depression, you won't find yourself well-represented here.
