A look at what it took to complete a massive mission submitted by ccrose on August 31, 2019, 10:26am I was mesmerized by Curtis’ pictures. They looked just a bit staged but, oh well, even Avedon told his subjects how to pose. But it was his life story that really caught my attention. What if your father said at dinner table ‘I’m going to photograph every Native American tribe. This may take a while.’
It took everything he had. And he had to constantly look up wealthy people and convince them he would deliver the goods. And be away from his wife and children.
It was an enormous commitment.
I think the idea of selling the collection was a tough thing to pull off and it ultimately landed in the Library of Congress.
Then there were criticisms that Curtis manipulates the Native American people, photographing them in poses that made their lives and culture look strong, well off in their old ways. And Curtis saw them suffering, starving, living poorly on reservation land.
So it was a dilemma, what image should he show, the image of their torn culture, mistreated by whites? Bedraggled by poverty?
A tough call. His intentions were honorable but reality didn’t match his original visions.
