Henry VIII's last wife
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 11, 2017, 2:23pm
When England's King Henry VIII proposes to Katherine Parr, she knows she has no choice but to accept, even though she is in love with Thomas Seymour. It is a dangerous job, being Henry's queen, as he has already executed two previous wives and made one so miserable she probably died before her time. Throughout the novel, Parr sees her life hanging by a thread on more than one occasion as Henry's roving eye lands on various other women at court. One of these women even apologizes to Parr, but says she dare not refuse Henry's amorous attention.
The novel also features the religious strive of the era, with even Parr's own household being tortured for heresy. These parts of the book are (rightfully) disturbing, so readers should be forewarned. The novel portrays Parr as leaving the castle under disguise to minister to some of the torture victims, an act that we cannot be sure actually happened.
Spoiler alert: In the novel, as in real life, Parr weds Seymour after Henry's death.
