jungle fever submitted by amy on July 13, 2011, 2:44pm I knew from Bel Canto that Patchett was likely to succeed in capturing a character's descent into the heart of darkness with all the melodrama of the jungle - the exotic tropical flora, piercing insect bites, sweaty, sleepless nights, and mysterious tropical diseases. And she delivers, with overtones of Joseph Conrad and Fitzcarraldo. I appreciate Bel Canto a little more, mainly because the seduction felt more subtle, the sources not so obvious; and the characters feel integral to the novel's texture. By contrast, State of Wonder's protagonist, Dr. Singh, often jolted me out of the story with her maddening naivety. Still, this is a thoroughly engaging trip down an Amazonian tributary, complete with anacondas, cannibals, and characters on the fringe of madness.

interesting book submitted by bnb on August 14, 2011, 7:59am I enjoyed reading this book. I saw it received a good review in Entertainment Weekly. I believe one of the indicators of a good book is how much time you think about it especially after completing it. My mind is still in the Amazonian jungle.

Great book submitted by ashflowtuff on June 29, 2012, 7:47am The story is fascinating and the writing is excellent. I highly recommend this book, and everything else by Anne Patchett. This is my favorite along with Bel Canto.

Nice atmosphere submitted by erlipp on August 29, 2016, 12:21pm Enjoyed the descriptions of the Amazon region and its people. Enjoyed the sections on Manaus The last chapter just didn't hold up to the rest of the book, it pulled me right out of the story. Felt very contrived, like it was the 'writer's exercise' that the whole story was written to support, but then failed to, for me.

Good until the last chapter... submitted by charlottedebaltzo on June 20, 2017, 8:09pm I enjoyed reading this book and thought it was so interesting. The author could've taken it so many ways, but it ended VERY abruptly and I thought it was one of the worst ways to end it!

Great book submitted by melissahimich on July 8, 2018, 6:29pm I love this book and couldn’t put it down. It had a really good story and seemed so realistic! It was very well written

So many surprises! submitted by annikajoyce on July 13, 2019, 9:15am I love a book that can catch me by surprise-- one that secretly foreshadows plot twists that I never saw coming. This book does that multiple times! It's so good. I highly recommend.
