A Must-Read submitted by pwiener on August 22, 2013, 9:40am One of the most important books about the decline of the USA to be written in the last 5 years. Packer especially takes to tasks the banking industry, corporate (and government) lawyers, the decrepit/absent regulatory process and virtually all politicians in both parties. He follows closely the lives of three representative people, gives brief career bios of a dozen or so well-known personalities, gives a detailed, long and sad portrait of a desperate bankrupt Tampa, as well as Las Vegas, Youngstown and elitist Silicon Valley, and in general holds out no hope for this country that is not grounded in people working together, creating local or native business models, helping one another, speaking out whenever possible and abandoning nearly all the so-called American values of sucking it up, worshipping the dollar, prideful independence, and exceptionalism that have created a ruling oligarchy.
Epic in Scope submitted by danzoia on July 11, 2023, 10:55am Packer has written a masterwork on the USA losing it's grip on sole superpower status. From small towns eroding to celebrity vignettes, Packer captures an immense scope that helps explain the great recession and beyond.
