The pictures create most of the book’s impact, masterfully blending collage and paint to illustrate how the main character’s real and imagined worlds interact with one another, and the balance of light and dark tones helps to illuminate the theme, particularly in the much brighter final spread. The story’s ending offers a note of positivity without undercutting its emotional weight, validating Louie’s experience while gently encouraging readers who may feel similarly isolated. It’s a subtle, but beautiful, effect in a book that has a sense of timelessness about it.
