my beloved diskworld submitted by ferdoble on August 11, 2011, 3:52pm To describe Terry Pratchett’s books is a difficult thing to do. The disc world series is in a word fantastic. Terry Pratchett, would seem to use the disk world, to take any theme, or know story and then twist it in his own very humorous way. These are not always laugh out loud funny (sometimes they are), bur rather the sort of funny that just sort of lifts your spirits a little bit.

I will say that in some cases there isn’t always a really strong story, sometimes its just his characters moving through one of those twisted themes. I like them all, you may want to start with the Most Von Lipwig story line (“Going Postal” and then “making money”) as at least the first one has a really great story line.

I love to pepper my reading queue with these books to keep all those books that take themselves seriously fresh and interesting.

I recommend reading them ALL.

OR listening to them. The two main narrators of Terry Pratchett’s books are Stephen Briggs & Nigel Planer and they take Terry Pratchett’s phenomenal writing to a whole new level.

The One True God submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 16, 2012, 1:47pm "Small Gods" follows the story of Brutha, a humble novice in a monastery to Om, the One True God. Despite their religion's teachings, most of the monks and their students are pompous and selfish, looking down upon those who work for a living and completly missing the fact that those same workers are the ones who make the monks' lives possible and that the humble gardener is actually the most wise person at the monastery.
The Great God Om himself learns humility when he somehow falls from his omniscient place in the sky into the body of a lowly turtle (with all the physical limitations that implies) and only Brutha, whom all the other monks and novices mock, can hear Om speaking.
This novel deals with religious hypocrisy and self-righteousness, especially when it comes to using violence to push one's religion on others or to maintain the power that religious structure gives to those at the top.
I highly recommend all of Sir Terry Pratchett's books, especially his 39 set on the Discworld, but read "Pyramids" first as it will introduce you to the idea of polytheism on that flat planet.

discworld submitted by unknown on August 10, 2013, 10:24pm Quite simply, Terry Pratchett is the funniest man alive. However, his early books are somewhat coarse, and the later books may confused a newcomer.

Small Gods is an excellent starting point for anyone. The book has new characters, a new plot, and nothing is expected of the reader. Its a wonderful book that will explain everything for someone who's never ventured into the Discworld before. Its also one of the funniest texts around.

Small Gods is also a great books in its seriousness. The book takes a witty look at the perils of making religion too organized - in worshipping the Church rather than the God. It is a book you can read, then mull over for hours - if you didn't break up laughing every two minutes.

Irreverent submitted by kathscot on August 10, 2014, 10:56am Takes an irreverent look at religion while maintaining a reverence for faith...pretty snarky though.

Funny book! submitted by Juno Ryan on July 1, 2017, 7:02pm Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite authors. This a hilarious book that I recommend to all Pratchett lovers.

Amazing! submitted by cbujaki on June 29, 2019, 4:36pm these books are so witty and humorous, I would recommend them to anyone who enjoyed the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, or anyone who enjoys dark humor and wit!

Terry Pratchett is a genius of his time submitted by thebearcavalry on July 3, 2023, 9:53pm A mix of comedy, satire, and social commentary - in this case, on religion. As with any Discworld book, absolutely worth the read.
