Surprisingly, not actually an autobiography submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 15, 2023, 9:05pm 3.5/5 stars. I was quite surprised to discover that this is a work of fiction and not an autobiography at all. While there are a few areas that parallel Johnson’s life, he wrote this anonymously at the time. I must admit, I was disappointed, as I had hoped to learn about his life.

However, it was an interesting book regardless. Johnson paints an interesting picture of the world of race and racism around the turn of the 20th century. I’m more than a little appalled by the classism depicted, though I suspect it reflects a certain upper-class view common then as now.

Overall an interesting addition to my reading list.
