Disney Buildings Beyond the Castles submitted by Meginator on June 12, 2021, 12:58pm This book strikes an excellent balance between technical knowledge and accessibility, and I feel like I got most of the major points even without having anything more than an occasional fleeting interest in architecture. To some extent, the book operates from a fixed point in time, as it came out in the mid-1990s and necessarily misses the construction of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney California Adventure, Walt Disney Studios Park, and TokyoDisneysea, to say nothing of an ever-growing slate of hotels and dozens of other projects across the world.
of the new hotels and other projects, but it is to the author’s credit that the information itself, while incomplete by today’s standards, doesn’t feel terribly out of date. With only a few exceptions (RIP Horizons), most of the buildings discussed still stand, and the book itself aims to explore the relevant designs in the context of the period of their creation. Altogether, this holds up really well and works on multiple levels: Disney fans approaching this book will learn something about ambitious architecture, architects will find an intriguing case study, and everyone else will learn something interesting about these cultural icons.
