Top Notch Mystery submitted by audreyh on June 14, 2015, 8:26pm As with most mysteries, the personality of the detective is an important aspect of the story. Cordelia Gray proves to be an engaging and intelligent sleuth. I wish that James had written more novels about her! As always, James' prose is energetic and enthralling, drawing readers immediately into the story. I particularly enjoyed the way that this novel played into her Adam Dalgliesh series at the end.
gotta love Cordelia

P.D. James is known for Adam Dalgliesh, but Cordelia Gray---the protagonist who makes her debut here and didn't get too many appearances, in the end---is a wonder too. It's somehow poetic that the traditional male detective, her partner, is dead at the beginning and she's gotta find her own way to carry on, do the job.
ETA: TOO BAD the (only) other Cordelia Gray novel (the arguably better, and setting-classic _The Skull Beneath the Skin_) is no longer in the AADL collection!
Best Female Detective submitted by athenabunny on July 24, 2017, 5:54pm An intelligent, well developed, female detective, written in P.D. James signature style. If you are a fan of her Adam Dalgliesh novels, I strongly believe you will enjoy this book as well.
James submitted by kathscot on July 28, 2017, 1:19pm Classic James, which I personally find a bit depressing, but well written.
