In 1930s Liverpool, England, Bronwen and Dylan live with their widowed mother, who works long hours doing other people's washing, and even though she sometimes must leave the children alone in the house, she cautions them not to speak to the O'Rileys next door, who go to a different church.

Illustrations Don't Match the Story submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 9:55am This book has a nice premise based on the author’s experiences as a child in Liverpool during the 1930s, but its illustrations fail to anchor the story in its time (instead implying a much earlier time period) and the story itself doesn’t convincingly convey the book’s intended message about tolerance. Young contemporary readers may not understand that the plot revolves around anti-Catholic sentiment, and the story itself is more about reminiscence than it is about a plot that comes in only during the book’s final pages. The historical aspect may interest a specific subset of readers attuned to this particular time period or these specific social issues, but the illustrations have an unfinished style that won’t convey much detail in either the settings or the characters to readers who can’t fill in the blanks on their own. This book is built on good ideas, but never combines them into something convincing.
