Woman Falls in Love with Convict
submitted by Aldous on February 26, 2007, 8:05am
Ivy Seidel, MFA, aspiring writer, waitress in a bar, small flat across the river from NYC, gets offered a job teaching creative writing to the inmates at a maximum security prison up near the Adirondacks. Vince Harrow, one of the inmates, has a talent for writing. Ivy investigates his writing as possibly autobiographical, goes to West Raquette, his hometown up on the Saint Lawrence, determines he did not help rob the Indian casino, a robbery resulting in three deaths.
Some effective scenes in Montreal, the prison, the bar, with an editor from the New Yorker. Some interesting stuff about writing. Some unlikely affectless responses from Ivy. A story intentionally spiraling out of whack. Compelling, compulsive writing to perhaps not enough effect.
