Mma "Precious" Ramotswe is now engaged to Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, the kind owner of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. This new development provokes a hostile reaction from Mr. Matekoni's unscrupulous maid, who quickly begins plotting the disintegration of the engagement. Despite all this, duty calls, and Mma Ramotswe is asked to help find an American woman's son who has been missing in Africa for 10 years.

Lives Up to the Charm of the First in the Series submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 9:25pm Ok, not as spellbinding as the first one, but that's ok, it's #2, not #1. It's certainly still a great read; it had a lot to live up to after the first book in the series.

I like that McCall Smith isn't afraid to progress his characters' relationship and develop family entanglements - I wondered whether things would be drawn out as long as possible, like they sometimes are on TV shows.

It's also nice to see Mma Makutsi getting out on her own a bit!

Still wonderful submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 14, 2013, 9:04pm I enjoyed this second book in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, but not quite as much as the first story... I think because there weren't as many different puzzles for Mma Ramotswe to solve. It's her view of the world that is so much fun to read, and this book was setting us up for a long-term exploration of her life, marriage, and future with children. I'm definitely going to keep reading the series (and I hear the HBO series is worth watching, so may check that out as well), but this episode just wasn't quite the hook that the first story was.

Tears of the Giraffe submitted by mk31 on July 26, 2014, 8:32pm Although it's not quite as good as the first in the series, it still makes me want to read more of the books. The characters are charming, and the mysteries intriguing.

Character development submitted by kferguson on August 18, 2016, 3:43pm Good to read in order
