Evocative submitted by FordAlpha on August 26, 2019, 10:20pm This sweet little book was a great favorite for me and my horse-loving sister when we were kids. We read a lot of Marguerite Henry's horse books, and "Brighty of the Grand Canyon" is one of the best. It's a fictionalized "biography" of a real burro who lived in the Grand Canyon in the early 20th century, before the Grand Canyon became a national park. In the course of the story, readers will learn the history of the Grand Canyon and how it became a National Park, and even some historical perspective on the broader National Parks system. "Brighty" includes a lot of exciting adventure, and it's also a mystery story with some sad and scary moments. One of the burro's long-time human companions is murdered, and Brighty searches for the killers. The writing beautifully evokes the time and place, and young readers who've never been to the Colorado Plateau area will surely want to visit the Grand Canyon after reading "Brighty".

Brighty the burro submitted by MistyFabulous on July 26, 2023, 10:08pm This book is about a burro who lived in the Grand Canyon. His owner was murdered so he had to fend for himself. Although the story has sad parts, it was interesting to learn about the Grand Canyon.
