The basic idea is that you eat a restricted amount 2 days a week (500 calories for women, 600 for men) and "normally" the rest of the week. The approach as presented here is quite flexible (e.g. weren't able to do your regular fast on Monday this week? do it on Tuesday instead!). The book also includes suggested meal plans for your fast days, and those are also fairly flexible.
