Candymakers submitted by karaelise on June 21, 2011, 8:25pm When it’s time for the annual candy making contest, Logan can’t wait to open the doors of the Life is Sweet candy factory to his fellow contestants. As the current candymaker’s son, he’s familiar with every wonder filled aspect of the factory, and is hoping to win the contest and prove himself. But of course, the other three contestants in Wendy Mass’s The Candymakers are hoping to win the contest too. Each of the contestants has a strange quirk, and as the story is told over again from each of their perspectives, it soon becomes obvious that not all of them are there just to make candy. Some things just don’t add up: Logan has mysterious scars, Daisy can lift more weight than most grown men, Miles speaks in his own language, and Philip is always dressed in a suit and jotting things down in a mysterious notebook. Then, of course, there is the night that they all catch each other trying to steal the factory’s secret ingredient.
The Candymakers is an engaging story that is one part mystery, and what part sweet and whimsical. Mass has created a cast of strong characters, from the four main children to the adults that surround them. Even though the story is re-told four times, it never gets old because each candymaker fills in the gaps of the previous candymakers’ points of view. Mass’ style allows readers to truly understand what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes, and the story of friendship that results from the layered stories is all the more moving for knowing the individual perspectives. Each narrator’s section opens with their cartoon silhouette in a frame, which adds to the mystery of the book since you cannot see their faces. This heartwarming mystery is sure to melt the hearts of readers and make them hunger for a piece of chocolate pizza. Recommended for grades 5 and up.

Creative! submitted by llgosbee on December 28, 2011, 11:03am Wendy Mass had done it again in a sweet-filled story about four random kids coming together to save the candy factory, Logan's only home. In this candy story, Logan, Miles, Philip, and Daisy have their own secrets, and their own lies. One thing after another and there they are trying to work together to save Logan's home, and everyone else! -Katie 6th Grade

Wendy Mass does it again submitted by bpascoe on July 25, 2013, 10:31am Once again Wendy Mass has written a thrilling book that keeps you turning the pages. With the story told from four points of view this is one of my favorite books!

Love it. submitted by kylahyatt on August 17, 2013, 12:59pm You would think that since the story is told 4 different times in the same book it would get boring, but the characters are so interesting and different that you want to know the story from each point of view. This is a great book. I think it is enjoyable by anyone.

sweet submitted by dillonac9 on June 19, 2014, 4:42pm this book was so good it made me want candy

Amazing!!! submitted by deokeun choi on July 25, 2014, 10:19am Great story that makes you keep turning the pages for more. Wendy Mass is the best! Perfect book for settling down with some candy...

Super Fun! submitted by purplekitty on July 25, 2015, 10:41am This is a great story. It's narrative is gripping, and each character is strikingly different. It is a story told from four different points of view. Each character has their own part, so you get to learn about each of the characters, and why they do what they do. Each character tells their story of the Candymaking contest, and the time before that. It's a little confusing at first, but it's a lot of fun! As you read this book, you will discover how connected all of the characters are, even before the candy contest! This is a great, exciting story, and I really enjoyed it.

Super Awesome! submitted by accountsfpd on August 29, 2015, 3:39pm This is one of Wendy Mass' best books written! Super suspenseful and I love how it switches perspectives each chapter! You'll love this book so read it!!

An Amazing Book!!! submitted by d903857 on June 19, 2017, 2:45pm The Candymakers is a very good book about a boy who has lived in a candy factory for his whole life and has never really met any other kids his own age. When the factory has a candy making contest, he meets new kids who are all very different. It's fun and games at first until the contest becomes the life or death situation of the factory and will influence many other lives as well.
Read the new book, too!; The Candymakers and the Great Chocolate Chase.

great book submitted by lucas C. on August 30, 2017, 8:13am my favorite book ever with the candy and mouth-watering suspense and adventure

Great Book submitted by hannahjosh on June 22, 2018, 7:17am The Candymakers has a very different type of writing. Wendy Mass had the book so the reader would read in one of the characters point of view. The characters are Logan, Daisy, Miles, and Philip. The characters all know each other from different times in their life. The CandyMakers is about a boy named Logan who has lived in a candy factory called, "Life is Sweet," but hasn't really met any kids his age. Then the Life is Sweet candy factory hosts a contest. That sounds fun, right? Well then it becomes a life and death situation. What will happen??? To find out, read The CandyMakers! Also there is a sequel to this book called," The CandyMakers and the Great Chocolate Chase." I think these books are for 3rd and up. Hope you like the books!

such a great book! submitted by Pia peanut on June 26, 2019, 7:35am I read this is fourth grade and that was the perfect time for me, I suggest you read it sometime around then. The book is wonderful and has many plot twists that you don't see coming. Introduced me to wendy mass who around 4th and 5th grade was one of my favorite authors!

The Candymakers submitted by jhaberich on June 25, 2021, 9:14am This is a really great book. There is a contest at the Life Is Sweet candy factory and this book is told in the perspectives of four different kids entering the contest. Each one tells the same story, but their lives are so different outside of the contest. You'll form an opinion about each character at the start of the book, but your opinions change dramatically as the book continues.

Very clever submitted by liebermanjanice on August 25, 2023, 9:39pm I really enjoyed this book. Hooray for Wendy Mass and all of her clever books!
