"Before his name became synonymous with a new style of comedy; before he had written, directed, or produced his first movie or TV show; before he and his roommate Adam Sandler were performing stand up at dive bars in LA; before all that, Judd Apatow was a kid in Syosett, Long Island who was utterly obsessed with comedy. At 16, he started hosting a radio show for his local high school station, and he would call up the biggest comics of the day - comics like Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Steve Allen, Sandra Bernhard; none of whom, by the way, had any idea they were talking to a kid in his parents' garage -- and talk to them about what got them into comedy, and what made them stay in. Thirty years later, Apatow is still that comedy nerd, and still interviewing comics about what drives them and why they do what they do. That obsession has made him one of the most recognizable and influential comedic filmmakers working today. This book is a collection of 30 years worth of conversations -- always funny, often poignant, and incredibly intimate -- that not only span Apatow's career, but his adult life. Featuring interviews with luminaries like Mel Brooks and Chris Rock and modern icons like Louis CK and Amy Schumer, this is a book for fans of comedy, from the nerdiest fan of all"-- Provided by publisher.

A heads up submitted by Kikumatsu97 on July 26, 2015, 8:11pm This is a book about comedy, but it is not a comedic book. Comprised entirely of interviews between Judd Apatow and various other comedians that he conducted between the 1980s and today, the focus is more on what led these people to comedy than the humor itself. It isn't really a memoir, though Apatow does reveal some things about his own past and process during these interviews as well.

Not what I expected submitted by Zekicmom on June 18, 2016, 1:33pm I was a little disappointed with this book. I had assumed it would be really funny which it wasn't, and at least some of the comedians Judd Apatow thinks are hysterical I am not fond of in the least, so that was hard to get past. Some of the interviews were interesting, but it's nothing I'll ever go back and re-read.

Good interviews submitted by mmckenzie on August 30, 2016, 8:47pm If you're looking for funny, this is not for you. But if you want to know more about what these comedians think, it's great.

A bit disappointed submitted by evie2017 on August 25, 2017, 6:44pm I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. Maybe it was silly of me, but I did not realize that this was a book of just interviews! If you're looking for a long comedic story/biography about Judd's life and journey through comedy...this isn't exactly it. Sure, you do learn a bit about his journey through these interviews, but that's all it is...just interviews! I ended up just skipping through interviews to comedians I had heard of/liked and reading those.

Great book! submitted by ekharris on August 6, 2018, 12:12pm I loved this book! Judd Apatow has amassed quite the collection of interviews with comedians throughout his life. You get to learn a little bit about many of comedy's greatest and most influential people.
