The Song Illustrated submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 10:03pm This picture book takes the lyrics of the classic Christmas song literally, showing the realistic consequences of a young girl’s impractical, oversized holiday gift. The text is delightful and the illustrations provide an excellent foil to it by taking the words quite literally, but I couldn’t get past the uncanny look of the main character, which I found to be somewhat unsettling. The illustrations do include some wonderful moments of visual humor, particularly in a two-page spread that shows Santa attempting to get the bespoke hippopotamus into a regular-looking suburban American home, but the full-page close-ups of the girl are less humorous and more distracting (to put it charitably). I love the idea here, but the execution is incredibly off-putting.
