strong female protagonists submitted by schriste on August 16, 2015, 7:51pm Ozma of Oz, originally written in 1907, is a better book for my young daughters than many more modern stories. It features not one but two female protagonists, Dorothy (making her second journey to a magical realm in this third book of the series) and Ozma, the girl ruler of Oz. Baum identifies both as "little girls." Yet these little girls are exceedingly courageous, resourceful, quick-thinking and clever, and in Ozma's case, unquestionably in charge. In fact, the older characters in the book often lack the girls' abilities. The Scarecrow is not notably smart, the army led by the Tin Man is not at all brave, and the ruler of Ev, Princess Langwidere, is vain and uninterested in her kingdom. The Nome King himself proves to be a match for a while, but is untrustworthy and lacks self-control. They are all outdone by Dorothy, Ozma, and Billina--a chicken!

My children enjoyed the story, and I enjoyed reading it to them. While Princess Langwidere may strike some kids as creepy (she has a collection of heads and choses which one to put on herself frequently) and the protagonists run into some serious obstacles, everything comes out (more than) right at the end. This book has aged amazingly well and is well worth reading today. I expect the same will be true for many years ahead.

Very enjoyable submitted by hduke on August 18, 2015, 10:06pm In which Dorothy meets the lovely ruler of Oz, Ozma, and the two girls save the ruling family of Ev, a kingdom next to Oz, with the help of Dorothy's yellow chicken Billinia. Worth the read.
