Not All That Practical submitted by Meginator on July 8, 2023, 10:05pm This is a useful book for beginning hockey players, but as with most physical activities the instructions and advice will usually make more sense in a practical context; there’s only so much a book can teach you about how movement on the ice feels, and this book generally opts for high-level advice over drills and other more practical suggestions. That said, this slim volume does offer some solid advice about some of the most important skills in the game, and new players can benefit from pairing the text with actual experience. The text is fairly clear, although many sections would benefit greatly from being broken down into discrete bullet points or steps, and the photographs generally (but don’t always) show a practical illustration of the relevant concept under discussion. The book also makes certain skills seem much, much, easier than they are in real life, which is potentially discouraging given the lack of appropriate disclaimers. This isn’t a great standalone book, even at the beginner level, but it does offer aspiring hockey players a solid place to start to get a general feel for the game’s central components.
