fun summer read but annoying dialogue submitted by bookher on August 6, 2015, 8:13am Ok, I gave this 3.5 stars because it was a fun summer read, very light but pleasant. However, this author was driving me absolutely nuts with her extreme usage of the word, 'Er..'. Really, who in real life goes around starting every sentance with, 'Er'??? It wasn't just one character in the book either that she used this for but rather everyone in the story seemed to not be able to start a conversation w/o saying, 'Er..' So, I think if the dialogue had been more realistic, I would have given it 4 stars because it really is a perfect story for a beach read.
Good travel fiction
submitted by A2AE on June 29, 2021, 6:31am
Pros: takes place on a beautiful island off the southwest coast of England that is only reachable during low tide via a cobblestone path; good escapist travel fiction. The main character bakes a lot, and the descriptions are vivid, which made me want to do the same.
Cons: The ending was jumpy and a bit irritating. There was some dated roles for women, including fears the main character had about slut shaming after kissing someone in public. The best friend character is unlikable.
