"Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows--everyone knows--that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn't, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose"-- Provided by publisher.

Creepiest Forest Ever! submitted by sdunav on June 12, 2015, 4:44pm Totally awesome fantasy - for older teens & adults, since it is pretty gruesome and violent in parts, and there's sex (and an attempted rape) in another part.

I like the Temeraire series a lot but think this coming of age story is actually much better. This was one of the best fantasy books I've read this year. There's an enchanted forest (shades of Mirkwood!), an evil (or maybe not so evil?) wizard in a tower, a girl who loves nature (with the awesome name Agnieszka), a female best friend, distant royalty, betrayals and so much more.

<3 submitted by brielle on July 23, 2018, 8:59pm So good. I really enjoy retellings of Beauty and the Beast, and this was an innovative take. Be warned of sexual/violent content.

Enjoyable book submitted by valeriemates on June 19, 2020, 10:26pm I enjoyed this book. The main character is bright and capable, and repeatedly breaks the stereotype of what I'd expect a rustic young woman in a fantasy novel to be like. I loved how magic works in this world, and how Naomi Novik describes characters weaving a spell.

The book was a real page-turner -- I enjoyed it a lot.

Note that the book has some sex and violence that are intensely detailed.

Well written submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 19, 2020, 11:13pm This story intrigued me from the beginning, but it was kind of a slow burn (in a good way). I was so invested by the end, and I couldn't help thinking that the male lead would have to be played by David Tennant if there were to be a film version. Naomi Novik is a very thorough and thoughtful writer.

great! submitted by audreyhalversen on July 13, 2022, 12:31pm This book gets hate sometimes and I'm not 100% sure why. I think this is one of the best stand-alone fantasy novels I've ever read. My one critique is that the male love interest could have been a LITTLE less ornery. Like I'm all for the enemies-to-lovers trope, but this guy was--at times--verging on just being an actual jerk.
