Slow start to a great 10 book series! submitted by eileenw on August 3, 2021, 5:48pm This book isn't my favorite (it isn't the authors' favorite either--they've said as much on their blog), but it is the start of an urban fantasy series that I LOVED and it's well worth making your way through this early book to get the grounding for the rest of the books.

The setting is an alternate Atlanta, one where about 30 years ago, magic started returning to the world, releasing monsters, transforming people, eating concrete, destroying tech, waking the old gods, and swallowing some buildings whole while leaving others untouched. Now magic comes and goes in waves; sometimes magic is up, sometimes tech is up -- so keep your refrigerator plugged in and a block of spelled ice in the back because no one can predict whether electricity will be flowing or combustion engines running from one moment to the next. The protagonist, Kate Daniels, has been training to survive in this world since she was a child. She's an uncanny swordswoman and a font of knowledge about monsters and mythology. She starts off alone and investigating the death of her former guardian; the more questions she asks the more she'll be drawn into Atlanta's magical communities, from the Shifters to the Knights of the Order.

In addition to the 10 books from Kate's point of view, there are tie-in novels (from other character's points of view), novellas, and numerous short stories. None of these "additional" works are necessary to enjoy the main series, but it is nice to know that if you're really digging the world and the writing that there's a lot more to explore as you go along.

Great series submitted by dana.elliott on June 10, 2022, 2:35pm This is the first book in one of my all-time favorite series! I wouldn't call it the best book in the series but it's enough that it made me want to continue, and ultimately finish, reading the rest of the books.
