Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live with their father and step-mother in the small village of Shadbagh. Their father, Saboor, is constantly in search of work and they struggle together through poverty and brutal winters. To Adbullah, Pari, as beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named, is everything.

Best of Hosseini submitted by krayla on June 16, 2014, 10:59am Although the Kite Runner was terribly sad, And the Mountains Echoed was uplifting and emotional. There are definitely sad elements to the story, but it focuses more on family, memory, and storytelling around the world. Hosseini's writing is magical and enthralling.

Goodbook submitted by SolaireFQ on August 11, 2018, 7:22pm This book was interesting with its intertwining of characters, which worked better sometimes than others.

Not his best submitted by tbbrown76 on July 15, 2019, 10:24pm Confusing and not a good ending. I do not recommend.

Another one of Hosseini's great works! submitted by cdeeya on August 28, 2022, 12:15pm I read And the Mountains Echoed after reading The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns (one of my all time favorite books), and I really enjoyed Hosseini's experimentation with non-linear storytelling, and weaving the concepts of time and memory (two themes in the story) into the structure itself. Set in Afghanistan just like his other books, Mountains has more elements of magic and mysticism in it than the other titles, perhaps prompted by the folklore, fairytales, and other such cultural aspects of the desert regions of Afghanistan. The book opens with a fantastic story being narrated by one of the characters to his children, and themes from that story are constantly revisited throughout the book. It was really fun to see all the threads start to connect as the book progressed, through the different perspectives and narrations. While some people say that the ending wasn't happy or satisfactory, I believe it was -- the characters, in some way, play out the fairytale that opens the book, and serve as a reminder that the ancient tales related to us by word or book were maybe, at some point, real stories. And the Mountains Echoed is a beautifully told story about a boy and his sister, and all the other people in their lives who have had equally complicated pasts and futures. Hosseini paints a romantic, but also real picture of the ancient deserts of Afghanistan, the modernity and hustle-bustle of Kabul, the stifling freedom of Paris, and the loneliness of American suburbia, especially for immigrants -- a loneliness akin to a raging river, eroding the memories of their homeland and ancestors from their very soul. In all of this, however, one thing always stands: your family will always come to find you.
