Sue Grafton's X: Perhaps her darkest and most chilling novel, it features a remorseless serial killer who leaves no trace of his crimes. Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this sociopath. The test is whether Kinsey can prove her case against him before she becomes his next victim.

X is for...Xcellent? submitted by Sara W on August 29, 2015, 9:01pm I love Sue Grafton, so it was going to be hard for me to dislike this book no matter what. She's written a great series, maybe a couple rough spots in the middle letters there, but for the most part, these are all solid mysteries. And best of all, Kinsey Millhone is an incredibly well-developed character. She's smart, she's got a sense of humor, she's not easily intimidated, except by fashion. I will miss Kinsey's voice terribly when Grafton zips up this series for good.

This entry into the series doesn't end as decisively as I think the majority of her other books have. Kinsey doesn't often leave loose ends, but I was glad that Grafton didn't try to jam in excess closure by tying up every issue neatly. The nasty next-door neighbor plot reminded me a little of the time Henry got involved with a gold digger, but otherwise, the use of California draught helps make Kinsey's 1980s issues feel very contemporary.

One of the things I love about these mysteries is the mundane elements. Not just what Kinsey ate for lunch, or what color her turtleneck is, but the simple, run of the mill job or observation that snowballed into mortal danger by the last chapter. It's not *just* that Kinsey can't leave well enough alone, it's that events are linked and information is power, and Kinsey doesn't take well to inaction or minding her own business.

I'm ready for Y.
