"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." With this famous declaration, Jane Austen launches into the story of the five Bennet sisters, a story that on first reading is full of suspense, surprise and, ultimately, satisfaction, and which on re-reading commands a deeper admiration for the author's remarkable skill in managing a deceptively complex plot to its triumphant conclusion. First published in 1813, and Austen's most popular novel in her own lifetime, Pride and Prejudice has since been widely recognised as one of the finest novels in the English language.
In early nineteenth-century England, a spirited young woman copes with the suit of a snobbish gentleman, and the romantic entanglements of her four sisters.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Pride and Prejudice submitted by adipirro on July 8, 2011, 7:18pm I've always loved the movie(s) so one day I decided to read the book. I can say that it definitely helps to watch the movie first because it helps you to better understand how the language is used. A highly recommended book!!

Romantic Satire submitted by ljq on July 10, 2011, 7:41pm It's wonderfully written and the satire of Mr. Collins is much appreciated.

A Classic submitted by smariej on August 30, 2012, 8:36am After seeing many versions of the movie, I finally read the book. It's a classic for a reason!

Pride and Prejudice submitted by SBNB on July 28, 2014, 9:22pm This is my favorite of Jane Austen's books. It's a classic!

Good submitted by sonjabc on June 18, 2015, 3:06pm I expected this book to be unreadable, and was pleasantly surprised! There was humor and a good plot. I would recommend also watching the movie; it can help with comprehension. Overall, I can see why this is a classic!

must read submitted by colettiennerenepollard on July 13, 2016, 9:13am ive always loved this book..an amazing read and a story that never gets old! very highly recommended

Love it! submitted by evie2017 on August 25, 2017, 7:01pm I'm usually not a fan of romance novels, but Jane Austin is a masterful author. Loved it!

Favorite book! submitted by irksit on July 8, 2018, 10:42pm This is my favorite book of all time. It’s the only book I’ve ever read more than once!

Five Stars - Great Fun! submitted by Avliss on July 20, 2018, 12:40am I avoided this book for a while because it’s a romance, which I don’t typically like to read. But several people told me that they had the same initial reaction, had to read it, and wound up loving it. So I figured, why not give it a shot?

Now I have too have joined the masses. I loved this novel. It’s surprisingly funny and full of interesting and amusing characters (some of whom I’d be quite happy never to meet in real life). And while I found myself rolling my eyes a bit at the drama between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, it was still rather sweet and engaging.

Final Thoughts: Five stars. Incredibly fun and worth several re-reads.

It's good submitted by majean on July 21, 2018, 3:04pm I'm a rebel; P&P is not my favorite Jane Austen novel. In fact, it may be my least favorite, but it's still a great book.

Un-put-down-able submitted by lollycandy on July 29, 2018, 4:14pm This book kept me guessing. I found myself binge-reading it long after I was supposed to sleep.
At first, the language was a little confusing, but I got used to it (after re-reading several pages).
Jane Austen uses the very polite language of her time to criticize societal norms. It was really funny, reading about Elizabeth (main character) using very polite language while secretly rolling her eyes at her foolish mother and silly neighbors (and, at several points, Mr. Darcy). I now know this is called "satire", and Jane Austen's is some of the best

One of my favorites submitted by wellscai on August 12, 2018, 12:32pm Pride and Prejudice is one of those books I reread every few years. The characters are great, and Austen's writing is insightful and hilarious. Even 200 years later, you feel for Lizzie as she deals with her ridiculous relatives and tries to keep them from screwing things up with the dude she likes.

Rereading It Constantly submitted by granumm on August 15, 2018, 9:47am Timeless and enchanting, it's still one of my favorites.

Great read!!! submitted by amd12 on August 27, 2018, 11:51pm Classic novel. Love it.

Brilliant submitted by lstorc on August 31, 2018, 10:44pm Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's most revered story because of it intelligence and insight into humanity. It is still one of the best romantic comedy stories of all time!

Classic submitted by c_zhang on June 27, 2019, 10:56pm I love how the characters are written. The story and characters are engaging. This story isn't boring at all. It can be hard to read, but only due to the writing style.

Good book submitted by jasonc1177 on July 31, 2019, 7:57pm this book is great. Very interesting ~~

Classic Austen submitted by crp on August 10, 2019, 7:01am Please read the book before watching the movie adaptation. It’s a classic and I loved it the first time and the most recent time I read it.

Read it for the perceptive wit and superb character delineation submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 17, 2019, 11:21am Set in rural England in the early nineteenth century, Austen's dominant plot line has the second eldest daughter of the Bennett family, Elizabeth, in a turbulent relationship with the good-looking, rich, but dreadfully proud Mr. Darcy. Subsequent to a disastrous and rejected marriage proposal, both Elizabeth and Darcy eventually learn to overcome their respective pride and prejudice. A well-told love story.

A favorite submitted by bfields on June 25, 2020, 10:28pm I've been rereading this semi-regularly for decades.

My all time favorite book! submitted by tkuz5 on June 22, 2021, 8:01pm This is my all time favorite book. It is fun, witty, and smart! Highly recommend!

Absolutely wonderful book! submitted by amandasaurus on June 15, 2022, 10:41pm This is one you’ll want to reread a few times for sure! Gets better each time-the jokes and sly bits always seem to go over my head at first and I catch them the second time around. It does help to have some knowledge of the societal norms of the age.

Classic submitted by kimsorenson on July 2, 2022, 3:18pm Definitely one of the best books out there, it's been one of my favorites for well over a decade. No matter how many times you reread or rewatch the movies, the story is always compelling and delightful.

Still hilarious in 2022 submitted by audreyhalversen on July 12, 2022, 10:11pm The fact that the humor in this book STILL lands in 2022 makes this an all-time classic.

such an amusing tale submitted by 21621031390949 on August 3, 2022, 6:29pm Haven’t read Jane Austen in decades. I’d forgotten what a good sense of humor she had!

Beautifully Written Novel submitted by MikkiMoscara on June 10, 2023, 11:37am The tension and passion between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy really moves the reader and really makes you feel. Elizabeth's lack of convention at the time is very inspiring. Beautiful work and highly recommended.

I don't get the fuss submitted by APluss on July 21, 2023, 10:43am I admit I'm not the right audience for this book, and I probably should have read it when I was younger, but I'm halfway through it, and I'm just bored. The dialogue is clever, but that's about it.

One of my favorites! submitted by suprana on July 29, 2023, 9:35pm Beautiful writing and captivating story. I love the witty dialogue and the development of the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.

Timeless submitted by Noah Oron on August 16, 2023, 8:17am Love the writing with a little humor
Love, relationships, money and status. All mixed together forming a difficult equation that can be solved only by giving more importance to one of them.
