Please and Thank You submitted by SBNB on August 26, 2017, 9:56am This is a nice little book about manners.
I Clearly Took This Too Seriously But Also I Really Didn't Like It submitted by Meginator on July 4, 2022, 9:17am I’m familiar with this saccharine series and I totally understand what the point is here, but I found the delivery to be stilted and ineffective in a way that made me actually question whether “please” and “thank you” are actually appropriate in certain situations (so, the exact opposite of the author’s intention). Mama Bear seems to rule with an iron fist, with no evidence in sight of the loving relationships that usually characterize Berenstain Bears books or of the snarky role reversal at the center of the bears’ earlier encounter with bad manners (a much better, and more effective, book), and everything seems stilted; there’s no story at all, just a series of didactic episodes, and doesn’t do justice to the decades of character development the series has had behind it. Yes, basic manners are important even in intimate family settings, but there’s a wide difference between asking for something politely and incorporating fully formal conversational patterns into daily dinner table conversation; the dynamics are actually a little creepy and controlling as presented, with the cubs even cleaning up Papa Bear’s mess for some reason(?). I’m probably (certainly) overthinking this, but I had a viscerally negative reaction to this book despite agreeing with the basic premise, generally enjoying the series, and fondly remembering the far superior “The Berenstain Bears Forget Their Manners”.
