"George Smiley is no one's idea of a spy--which is why he's such a natural. But Smiley apparently made a mistake when he concluded that the affable Mr. Fennan had nothing to hide. Why, then, did the man from the Foreign Office shoot himself in the head only hours later? Or did he?"--P. [4] of cover.

enjoyable mystery with spies in it submitted by camelsamba on August 3, 2017, 8:53pm Despite being a le Carré, this is not really a spy novel - it’s a "detective story with spies in it." George Smiley is assigned to investigate Samuel Fennan, because the foreign office received a letter accusing Fennan of Communist connections. They chat, Smiley decides he’s okay and tells him as much - and then Fennan is found dead, allegedly suicide, and his wife is saying it’s because of the inquiry. Smiley dives in to figure out what happened. The title points to an important element in the plot: as Smiley is talking to Fennan’s wife, the house receives a call, sort of like a wake-up call from the main switchboard. (I guess that was a thing back in the day? or in England? smaller town England?). He mulls this over all along the way and eventually it helps him break the case. I enjoyed this mystery with spies in it.
