Presents an illustrated biography of the man who broke baseball's color barrier and changed the way Americans viewed equality in sports.
"Jackie Robinson always loved sports, especially baseball. He could run, leap, and throw better than any other kid around. But he lived at a time when the rules weren't fair to African Americans: Even though Jackie was a great athlete, he wasn't allowed on the best teams just because of the color of his skin. Jackie knew that sports were best when everyone, of every color, played together. He became the first black baseball player on a major-league team, and his bravery helped lead the way to equality in all sports in America."--Jacket.

Awesome submitted by TLW1998 on July 23, 2019, 9:32pm This series of biographies for children called “Ordinary People Change the World” is excellent. Each book gives a child-level biography of the person starting from when they were a child (so it relates to children). Also, each book has its own inspirational message. The writing is excellent, and these books are filled with cartoon-like younger figures of the person. My preschooler and I both really enjoy reading these books, so much so that we bought quite a few of them. This book is about Jackie Robinson.

Great Biography Format for Young Readers submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:22pm This charming biography emphasizes Jackie Robinson’s bravery in the face of the racism he faced while becoming the first Black MLB player in the modern era. The illustrations consistently depict Robinson as a young child, which makes him more relatable to young readers and allows them to better understand what he faced and place themselves in his position. Brad Meltzer does not gloss over the harsh realities of anti-Black racism, relating specific incidents from Robinson’s life (but toning down the violence a little) and using repeated direct speech from the characters to emphasize its unfairness. The visual style is a blend of a traditional text-heavy picture book and comics, which allows Meltzer and Eliopoulos to pack in a lot of information without the book becoming overwhelming. The book is inspiring simply by relating the details of Jackie Robinson’s life and career, and it is a great book for any baseball fan.
